How to Use the Steady Whistle Pattern
Choose Steady to play a continuous sine tone while playback is active. Set a frequency, check the visible value, and start with low system volume. Use hold for direct control over stopping, or toggle to keep playback running until you stop it. Keep the speaker away from ears and stop if anyone seems uncomfortable.
Set the pitch before starting
Open the whistle controls and select Steady. Read the current frequency before pressing play. The coarse controls move the setting by 100 Hz. Five presets offer 4, 8, 12, 16, and 18 kHz. A preset above the current cap is reduced to that cap, so the displayed value is the setting to check. For example, selecting 18 kHz does not always mean the app will generate an 18 kHz tone. The available ceiling depends on the actual AudioContext sample rate.
- Use a preset when you want a quick frequency selection.
- Use the coarse controls when you want a nearby value.
- Check the displayed number after either kind of change.
Choose how playback stays active
Hold mode ties playback to holding the control. Release it to stop the continuous tone. Toggle mode keeps playback active after the first activation and stops it on the next. Choose the control method before starting so the stopping action is clear. With keyboard focus outside a typing field, Space toggles playback and Escape stops it. These shortcuts do not apply while typing. The app uses a 10 ms cosine fade at sound edges. That short fade shapes the transition; it does not create recurring gaps in Steady mode.
- Try the stop action during a brief first playback.
- Keep the active page in view while using toggle.
- Stop playback before changing your speaker connection.
Read the controls without assuming speaker performance
The app calculates its maximum frequency by multiplying the audio sample rate by 0.45 and rounding down to a whole number. This limits the generated signal; it does not measure what the speaker produces. Steady plays a continuous sine tone while playback remains active. A high number on screen cannot confirm a matching sound in the room. Do not raise volume just because a selected frequency seems silent. Software gain alone does not describe room loudness. Speaker hardware and system volume affect the result.
- Begin with the device volume low.
- Keep the device away from both human and animal ears.
- End playback if the sound causes discomfort.
Handle stops and keep records separate
Playback stops when the tab becomes hidden, an interruption occurs, or a devicechange signal arrives. Browser reporting of device changes is incomplete, so some audio route changes may go undetected. Stop manually before connecting headphones or switching outputs. If playback ends unexpectedly, inspect the controls and output before starting again. The separate reaction feature runs a four-second burst and then offers reacted or noReaction. Its last three dated outcomes stay locally, with a clear action. Those entries do not measure the speaker or prove a training result. Dogs vary in their responses.
- Treat an automatic stop as a reason to check the current setup.
- Use reaction records only for the choices you actually observed.
- Clear saved outcomes when you no longer want them stored.
- Lower system volume, open the whistle, and select Steady.
- Choose a preset or adjust by 100 Hz, then read the current frequency.
- Select hold or toggle and play briefly with the speaker away from ears.
- Release hold or stop toggle playback before leaving the page or changing outputs.
Does Steady have a built-in end time?
Steady is the continuous pattern. Hold ends on release, while toggle needs a stop action. Automatic stops also apply. Do not expect a preset duration from this pattern.
Why can a high setting seem silent?
The visible setting describes the generated tone. It does not verify speaker output. A phone or laptop speaker may not reproduce that frequency, so silence is not a reason to increase volume.
Can I use the whistle without an account?
Yes. The app has no accounts, microphone use, uploads, ads, or telemetry. Hosting metadata still exists. Its local reaction records are separate from account storage.
