Dog Whistle

How to Compare the Whistle App with a Physical Whistle

Choose between the app and a physical whistle by comparing their controls and how you will operate them. The app provides a visible frequency setting, sound patterns, and on-screen start and stop controls. Its sound depends on your device's audio output. A physical whistle needs a separate assessment of its own design; the app's settings do not describe that object.

Compare controls you can actually inspect

Begin with the app's visible current setting. You can make coarse frequency changes in 100 Hz steps or select one of five presets. A preset above the calculated cap is reduced to that cap. Check the displayed value after selecting it. Do not assume that the same number describes the pitch of a physical whistle. Inspect that whistle's own controls and instructions separately. The useful comparison is whether you can identify and repeat the setting you want to operate, with the equipment you have.

  • Read the current frequency before starting playback.
  • Try the preset buttons with playback stopped to inspect their resulting settings.
  • Assess a physical whistle from its own stated features.

Account for the speaker as well as the generator

The app's upper frequency limit comes from the actual AudioContext sample rate. It is calculated as the whole-number floor of that rate multiplied by 0.45. This is a digital generation limit. It is not a measurement of speaker output. The app's sound depends on the audio output of the device running it. A displayed high setting therefore cannot establish what sound reaches the room. Do not raise volume simply because you cannot hear a selected tone. Dogs vary, and a reaction or lack of reaction does not settle what your speaker produced.

  • Keep system volume low when first checking playback.
  • Keep the sound source away from human and animal ears.
  • Stop if the sound causes discomfort.

Try the app's playback handling

The app offers steady, pulse, and warble patterns. Choose hold operation when you want playback tied to holding the control, or toggle operation when you want a separate start and stop action. A 10 ms cosine fade softens the sound boundaries. Software gain defaults to 10% and is capped at 25%; that percentage is not a measurement of loudness in the room. Your system volume also matters. When comparing handling with a physical whistle, focus on whether you can start and stop each item comfortably in your intended position.

  • Check hold and toggle behavior at a low volume.
  • Use Space to toggle playback when you are not typing.
  • Press Escape to stop sound when focus is outside a text field.

Check interruptions and extra app functions

Playback stops when the tab becomes hidden, playback is interrupted or the browser reports a sound output change. Browsers may miss some output changes, so stop playback yourself before changing audio equipment. A physical whistle has its own design and sound; the app’s frequency settings do not describe it. The app also provides classic and soft clickers, a bundled Quick yap sound, and three preset drills. The drills share a limit of three total runs per day, resetting at midnight UTC. Compare the controls you need and how you will use them. Dogs respond differently to sounds, and neither option promises a particular response.

  • Check the stop control before switching speakers or headphones.
  • Count the drill limit across all three presets.
  • Consider the searchable text lessons if you want operating guidance inside the app.
  1. List the controls you need, then inspect the app's frequency display, presets, patterns, and hold or toggle choices.
  2. Check your device's audio output at low system volume while keeping its speaker away from ears.
  3. Practice starting and stopping playback, including the keyboard controls when you are outside a text field.
  4. Compare those observations with the physical whistle's own instructions, handling, and stated features before choosing.
Is an 18 kHz setting proof that my speaker produces 18 kHz?

No. The preset may be reduced by the generation cap, and speaker response is unverified even when the display shows 18 kHz.

Does the app replace every function of a physical whistle?

That depends on the physical whistle and your operating needs. Compare its actual features with the app's visible controls rather than assuming equivalence.

Can I depend on automatic stopping when audio equipment changes?

Not for every change. The app stops on a devicechange signal, but browsers may miss some route changes. Stop sound manually before switching equipment.
