Dog Whistle

How to Control the Dog Whistle with Your Keyboard

With the app active and no text field being edited, press Space to toggle whistle playback. Press Escape to stop. These shortcuts do not act while you are typing. Check the visible frequency, playback mode, and gain before starting, and keep the on-screen controls available for a direct stop.

Prepare the controls before pressing Space

Open the whistle controls and read the current frequency. Start with low system volume and keep speakers away from ears. Software gain defaults to 10%, with a range from 0% to 25%. That setting is separate from your device volume. Choose steady, pulse, or warble before using the shortcut. The app also offers hold and toggle operation through its controls. The documented Space shortcut toggles playback, so do not assume that releasing Space will stop a tone. Use a second Space press or Escape when you want it to end. Stop immediately if the sound causes discomfort.

  • Check the displayed settings before each keyboard start.
  • Keep a finger near Escape during your first trial.
  • Use the visible stop control if keyboard focus is unclear.

Move out of text entry before using shortcuts

Typing takes priority over the whistle shortcuts. For example, while entering a search in the lesson area, Space belongs to your text. Escape also does not trigger the whistle stop shortcut while typing. Finish the entry and leave the text field before using keyboard playback controls. If Space appears to do nothing, first check whether you are still editing text. Then use the on-screen playback control if needed. Browsers can require a direct user action before audio plays; the Browser audio playback source explains that rule. Repeated key presses without checking the app state can make it harder to tell whether playback is currently on.

  • Finish your search before returning to whistle control.
  • Check the active field when a shortcut has no effect.
  • Stop through the app controls before resuming text entry.

Keep frequency changes separate from playback keys

Space and Escape control playback. Use the frequency controls to choose pitch. Coarse changes move in 100 Hz steps, and presets offer 4, 8, 12, 16, and 18 kHz. Each preset is clamped to the available cap. The minimum is 440 Hz. The maximum is the actual AudioContext sample rate multiplied by 0.45, rounded down to a whole hertz. The Audio context sample rate source describes that browser property. Always read the resulting value after choosing a preset. This digital limit does not measure speaker output. Silence at a high setting does not confirm that the speaker is producing it.

  • Do not assume every device can select the same highest frequency.
  • Many built-in phone and laptop speakers cannot reproduce ultrasonic tones.
  • The whistle applies a 10 ms cosine fade at sound edges.

Handle tab switches and audio interruptions

Sound stops when the tab becomes hidden, when audio is interrupted, or when the app receives a devicechange signal. Returning to the page is a good point to inspect the controls before pressing Space again. Stop manually before changing the audio output. Browser support for devicechange is incomplete, as the Audio device change event limits source explains. The app cannot promise to detect every switch between speakers, headphones, or another route. Also keep the shortcut scope clear: Space and Escape are documented whistle controls. Do not assume that Space starts a clicker, the Quick yap synthetic marker, a reaction burst, or a preset drill.

  • Pause your keyboard use while changing audio equipment.
  • Check system volume again after selecting another output.
  • Treat dog reactions as variable, without expecting a particular result.
  1. Set a low device volume, choose the whistle frequency and mode, and review the visible gain.
  2. Leave any text field, then press Space once to start the current whistle setting.
  3. Press Escape to stop, or press Space again to toggle playback off.
  4. After typing, switching tabs, or changing audio output, check the controls before starting another sound.
Why does Space add a gap to my search instead of playing?

You are typing in a text field. Leave that field before using Space as a whistle shortcut.

Will releasing Space stop the whistle in hold mode?

Space is documented as a toggle shortcut. Use Escape or a second Space press to stop; use the app's hold control for hold operation.

Can Escape stop sound while I edit lesson search text?

The shortcut is inactive while typing. Use the visible stop control, then finish editing before returning to keyboard playback.
