No Whistle Sound in Safari: What to Check

Open onlinedogwhistle.com in the visible Safari tab, lower your device volume, select steady mode, and start a brief tone with the playback control. If a high preset seems silent, stop and choose a lower frequency before trying again. Silence alone cannot tell you whether Safari stopped playback or your speaker cannot reproduce the selected tone.

Start playback from the page

Keep Safari open on the whistle page while checking sound. Tap or click the playback control yourself. Browser audio rules can prevent sound from starting before a user action, so opening the page is not the same as starting a tone. Use hold mode for a brief check: press to play, then release. For a silent high preset in Safari, stop playback and select a lower frequency. If you use a keyboard, Space toggles playback and Escape stops it, unless you are typing in a field. Keep the device away from ears and stop immediately if the sound feels uncomfortable.

  • Choose steady mode first so pauses do not confuse the check.
  • Read the current frequency before pressing play.
  • Leave other tabs closed or untouched during this short check.

Separate a high frequency from a playback fault

The whistle creates a sine tone. Its minimum setting is 440 Hz, with coarse changes of 100 Hz. Presets offer 4, 8, 12, 16, and 18 kHz, subject to the current frequency cap. If you began at 18 kHz, stop and select a lower setting. Silence in Safari alone cannot distinguish stopped playback from a speaker's frequency limits. A silent high preset therefore does not prove that the page has failed. The cap equals the whole number below the actual AudioContext sample rate multiplied by 0.45. MDN describes that sample rate in the linked reference. This calculation limits digital generation; it does not verify speaker response.

  • Check the visible value after selecting a preset.
  • Expect presets above the cap to be reduced to that cap.
  • Avoid raising volume repeatedly to chase an inaudible tone.

Check both volume and the selected output

The app starts with software gain at 10%, and its range ends at 25%. That percentage is separate from your device volume. Begin with low system volume and check that app gain is above zero. Stop playback before checking whether sound is going to the speaker, headphones, or another connected output. After changing the output, return to Safari and start another brief check yourself. The app stops on a devicechange signal, but browser support for that signal is incomplete. MDN documents its limited availability. Some route changes may therefore pass without a stop. Do not depend on automatic detection when connecting or removing audio equipment.

  • Make one adjustment between checks.
  • Keep the frequency fixed while comparing volume settings.
  • Stop manually before any output change.

Handle stops and offline loading separately

Switching away from Safari can stop a tone because the tab becomes hidden. An audio interruption also stops playback. Return to the page and use the playback control again; silence after a switch does not by itself indicate a broken speaker. The app uses a 10 ms cosine fade at tone edges, so a hard click is not required as proof of playback. Offline use is a separate issue. The PWA can work after an initial successful cache, but offline access is not guaranteed in every browser. If the page does not load offline, open it with a connection before checking audio.

  • Check loading before changing sound settings.
  • Use a fresh manual start after an interruption.
  1. Bring Safari to the front and open the whistle controls.
  2. Set low device volume, nonzero app gain, and a lower steady tone.
  3. Press briefly in hold mode, then release before making changes.
  4. Check the output destination and retry with one setting changed.
Does an active playback control prove that sound is audible?

No. It indicates app operation, while physical output still depends on volume, the selected route, and speaker response.

Should I select warble or pulse to fix silence?

Begin with steady playback. Pulse and warble change the tone pattern; neither establishes that your speaker can reproduce a frequency.

Can a dog's reaction confirm that Safari works?

Dogs vary. A reaction or lack of reaction does not verify the frequency or sound level produced by your device.
